Canadian tenor Matthew Dalen is a rising star in the opera world. Praised by Opera Canada for his warm tone and good connection to text, Matthew has graced stages across Canada, the United States, and Europe. From his debut at Edmonton Opera as Borsa to leading roles with esteemed orchestras and opera companies, including Roméo in Gounod's Roméo et Juliette and Rodolfo in Puccini's La Bohème (Opéra du Royaume 2021, 2023), Matthew's talent shines brightly. With a repertoire that encompasses full lyric and dramatic roles, he brings depth and emotion to his portrayals. Dalen has a deep passion for new music and has created roles in several new operas, including a major character in Bilodeau’s La beauté du monde (Opéra de Montréal, 2022) and Laura Kaminsky’s upcoming new creation February (Opera on the Avalon, Oct. 2023). As a graduate of Vancouver Opera's Young Artist Program and Opéra de Montréal's Atelier Lyrique, Matthew's dedication to his craft and his commitment to sharing the joy of opera make him an exciting and influential force in the opera scene.
Recent and upcoming engagements include Handel’s Messiah with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Puccini’s La Bohème with Opéra du Royaume as Rodolfo, Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, and Mozart's Requiem with Orchestre Classique de Montréal, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with Niagara Symphony and l’Orchestre Symphonique de Gatineau. Matthew also returns to the Opéra de Montréal for Die Zauberflöte (Der erster geharnischter Mann, May 2022) and the premiere of La Beauté du Monde, creating the role of Hermann Göring (November 2022).
Dalen has been featured by VOICEBOX: Opera in Concert in the title role of Schubert’s Fierabras in its North American Premiere in Toronto and as Borsa in Edmonton Opera’s Rigoletto.  He recently understudied Alfredo in Edmonton Opera’s La Traviata and has performed numerous roles as a young artist with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. Other roles in his repertoire include Lensky in Eugene Onegin, Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor, and Tamino in Die Zauberflöte.
